February 2017 NewEthic Newsletter

Whoa! It’s already February! But, let us be super real, this year has already been pretty tough and many of us feel the generally tired fatigue of the onslaught of the news every day. With that in mind, I invite you all to do a little extra self-care! This was last month’s focus which hopefully got you thinking more about what you can do to support yourself, staying healthy, and rad af. Let’s keep building those up to stay sane, happier, and focused during these trying times. Stretch, eat enough, drink hella water, go outside, do whatever it takes to keep healthy ❤

Also, it was so rad celebrating our 2 Year Anniversary with you last month! Thanks to EVERYONE who came and made it the bestest! Big thanks go out to Humane League for tabling, No Worries Filipino Food Truck and The Butcher’s Son for bringing the delicious food! It is really all of you that make us who we are. Endless thanks for your commitment to health, community, and becoming stronger than yesterday!

This month’s focus is DEADLIFTS AND DRIVE! We will be thinking of all the things that drive us forward, motivate us, and keep us charging towards our goals. We will also be getting our focus onto some DeadLifts, our form, confidence and getting some epic PRs!

Lift For Liberty!

We are doing a challenge here to contribute to the cause! Starting next week, we will be taking donations for the ACLU as well as possibly other organizations that are standing up for what is good and right against the f***ing BS that our current administration is acting on. Each week we will call for donations and at the end of the week, all the coaches will lift that amount of pounds each! If you’re interested, we’d love to have you join us!  YAY!

Attendance! (Holly’s Folks!)

As of Feb, I’ll be requiring payment for non-emergency last minute cancellations. I write workouts for the individuals who attend and last minute cancellations often cause those folks who were RSVP’d to have the last minute canceled class (which is really frustrating) and wastes others time/energy. Also, please try to RSVP with 24 hrs notice so I know who’ll be attending and can plan accordingly. These are especially important as classes grow to make your workout the raddest I can! I believe in your ability to take responsibility for being here when you say you will and supporting everyone who trains with you! With this in mind, I’m now offering a 10% off if you pay (cash) at the beginning of every month. If you have to miss any, with proper notice, they’ll totally roll-over to the next month of course and you’re always welcome to join more classes during the month! If you want to add to a class last minute, or if you need to cancel due to circumstances outside of your control, please text me to let me know. Thanks all!

Make a drive file for any and all goals you have for this coming year. Don’t be afraid to think big (but realistic :p). Do this to help stay accountable to yourself. Set weekly steps in there to help build a path to a realistic outcome. For example, if you wish to increase your deadlift by 60 pounds by 2018, plan to hit a 5 lb PR each month. At the end of 12 months, you should be right on track! Let’s get strong and stoked!

We now have new shirts! NewEthic Rhino / Strength Through Compassion T-Shirts are $25 with $5 from each shirt sale going to a Rhino and Elephant Sanctuary!

strong-afAlso, Sparkle Unicorn / Strong AF Raglan Shirt for $30 Come get them while you can!

4This month we’ll be hosting a Ladies of Harvest Home Workout! The women of Harvest Home Sanctuary will be joining us on FEBRUARY 18th and bringing Esther the pig as well as hens and likely more animals. We will all work out together then hang out for a presentation and food with them (Flyer Coming Soon!). We are incredibly stoked on this event! All genders welcome and bring your friends! This will be a very light workout ❤

Love Stinks Workout!
5This will be the normally scheduled Coach Holly Powerlifting at 7 pm 2/14 Tuesday but will be Co-Coached by Alex, Ed and Holly focusing on smashing bad feels or just working out! We can accommodate any level of fitness, so feel free to bring friends (but let us know). Yay!

Fat Chance Coaching!

Hello! Alex of Fat Chance Coaching here.

Almost anyone can do a deadlift which is why I love them so much! Here are some adaptations and modifications I find helpful for working with a disability, injury, or mobility challenge:

  • Pro Bodybuilder Nick Scott shows you how to do a wheelchair deadlift in this video.

  • Deficit Deadlifts using stacked plates is an easy way to work with a limited range of motion while still getting a killer workout.

  • Also give rack pulls and seated deadlifts a try!

Alex’s Classes:

M/W 7pm Queers Who Lift

M/W 8pm Level 2 Powerlifting

I’m opening a conditioning focused class starting the week of 2/13 called HIIT IT. HIIT me up if you’re interested!

2/14 Love Stinks Valentine’s Day workout with Holly and Myself!

Email fatchancecoach@gmail.com to join group classes or enquire about semi-private and one-on-one training.

Holly Coaching!

I’ve added Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 pm classes, and there are many new folks so I’m listing the schedule below ❤ I also have some mid-day availability for Semi-Privates if you’d like to dig into anything specifically with a friend! Let me know and we can schedule you.

Monday – Skill and Strength Group! @7:30 pm {This will be a class for learning new things. All abilities welcome, we will start from the bottom and work our way up so don’t feel afraid or concerned if you see something you don’t know how to do!}

Tuesday – Muscle Babes @6 pm {This is Powerlifting with some conditioning occasionally and is limited to lady folks only}

  • Powerbuilding @7 pm {This is Powerlifting with some conditioning occasionally plus accessories and is open to all!}

Wednesday – WednesYay Class @3 pm AND @7:30 pm (These are Strength and Conditioning}

Thursday – Epic Powerlifting Crew @5:30 {This is a Powerlifting centered class for those who want to kill it at Squat/Bench/Deadlift specifically and/or wants to compete! Open to all, it’s 90 min to allow for more rest and lots more attention to recovery, injury assessment or prevention, and creates a wonderfully chill feel.}

  • Conditioning @7 pm {The focus here is conditioning with more body weight movements or light weights! This was, originally, meant as an add-on for the Epic Powerlifting Crew class but is open to everyone irregardless. Those who come to both, the conditioning is half off ($10) to accommodate not breaking the bank to train :D)

Friday – Olympic Lifting Class @7 pm {This is focused on getting better at Olympic Lifts.}

Saturday – The O.G. Group! Coffee & Barbells! @ 10 am {The first ever group that I hosted here and still, often, the most fun! This will be Strength and Conditioning}

Sunday – BRUNCH! No workout this day, just all the rest and nom. Feel free to come train this day for the open gym, though!

Did you know that Holly has a podcast?! Check it out HERE!

Coach Rich Updates!

8I’m currently taking on 1:1 and Semi-Private clients for strength & conditioning training. I’m now taking interested sign ups for “Riffs and Reps Class”. Please contact me at richdgaccione@gmail.com for rates and availability, but this class is filling up fast so reach out ASAP to reserve your spot! Details TBA but if you’re interested in heavy music and heavy lifting with a good vibe please let me know. Also, please let your friends know!

Coach Rosie!

Tips for deadlift: You move around the bar, the bar does not move around you for a straight up and down bar path. Keep the bar close, and touching your shins. Also, wear cute/tough deadlift socks to protect your shins and feel awesome.

What keeps me driven is always wanting to see how much I can push myself. How heavy can I lift, and see the amazing things the human body is capable of with perseverance. It’s rewarding and makes me feel like a superhero.
Yes Bodies with Coach Emmet!

The month of February is short but sweet; so can workouts and self-care moments to keep us motivated be.

DRIVE: When it comes to taking care of myself, there’s a pretty wide range of things that keep me going, however, to even get to that point, the first step in my book is doing the work to figure yourself out so you know what you need to keep that drive. It’s thinking about needs and wants, and getting really specific about what that means. In my case, an example is that – big picture – I want to start the day out in a good way with feeling energized, and what that looks like on a detail level is that I need to have bananas at the house at all times, because I use it to make morning smoothies, which is a self-care way for me to start the day out strong. When I maintain my self-care routines, I feel energized and driven to keep moving forward.

DEADLIFTS: As someone said, “there are good exercises, great exercises, and then – there’s the deadlift”. It’s a great all-around strength exercise that I personally feel helps me feel strong and empowered, even just from the posture because you have to keep your back straight and your chest up. One of my favorite tips for deadlifts is: if you need to start out/go lighter – stack a few weight plates on the floor as a base to create some space for your feet.

January 2017 NewEthic Newsletter

The New Year is upon us! We are working on making NewEthic an even radder community and space going into 2017. We have expanded into the side room with the roll up door, matting is down and there will soon be 3 new Squat Racks including one outside! We revamped our plate storage, added more fun toys like the Jerk Blocks, Black Battle Ropes, and More! We are clearing out all the negativity set down by 2016, and holding space for the new year to be epically positive! Many of our coaches are adding new classes, opening up more time for private training, and exploring ways to make training here the best experience possible.
We, as a team, have decided to set mental and physical focus’s for each month going forward. January is Squats and Self-Care! January can be a really difficult month for many of us with all the bs “New Year, New You” junk. We think you’re rad and perfect just as you are, so cheers to “New Year, Same F***ing You!” We invite you to dig into self-care, take care of yourself, and spend some extra time taking care of, healing and nourishing yourself. Sleep more, eat more of what makes you feel good, get body work done, dig into recovery and mobility and generally give yourself some love. We’ll spend time in class on stability and strength in standing up and rising strong! I recommend investing in ROMWOD, and spending at least 15 minutes a day moving gently. – Holly
PR Party!
People are still finishing testing, but we’ll know soon and let you know asap! Prizes will be awarded next week! Yay!
Facebook Group!
We’ve started a closed Facebook group for just NewEthic peeps! Please add yourself to the group, if you’re not in it already. This is space to discuss anything related to NewEthic such as when you’re training during open gym if you want a partner, if you’re selling anything, want to communicate about events or whatever else is needed/wanted. Please keep this a fully positive, and supportive, space. Add here ❤
2nd Anniversary Party!
Join us in celebrating NewEthic’s Second Birthday Saturday, January 21st!
S’more Positivity Party!
As most of you know this year has sucked for many folks, and our neighbors were a large part of the sucking for Ed and myself (Holly). But they are officially gone and we are so pumped! We are going to burn some sage in the firepit, clear out the energy in the courtyard, then roast marshmallows and nom s’mores. You’re welcome to come, clear your energy, and refocus around the fire with us! This will be an incredibly informal, chill, occasion on Saturday night (NEW YEARS EVE aka tomorrow) then we plan to head to a secret spot above the East Bay to reflect and watch fireworks! Text Holly or Ed if you’d like to stop by, we will likely start around 6 or 7 pm.
A Quick Note:
-Please try to RSVP for classes within 24 hrs of that class happening, or at least as soon as you can (for super last minute changes, please text your coach). Also, please UN-RSVP in the same time period or more so we can know who to expect. Every workout is written to accommodate the needs, goals, desires, and abilities of each person attending so it’s much better if we know who will be in attendance, especially when planning team or partner workouts. Thanks!!

Emmet’s Announcements!
This past year of 2016 was hard for many of us as individuals and as communities. 2017 can’t arrive too soon, however, we move forward honoring the memories of our loved ones and with the opportunity to renew our commitment to taking care of ourselves and building a strong community. In the spirit of creating a solid physical, mental and emotional foundation to build on for this coming year, we’ll especially be focusing on two things in class during the month of January: grounding and lengthening – as a reminder to ourselves of our strength, integrity, and resilience.
So what does that actually mean? In All Bodies Core class, we’ll be literally getting down on the ground to focus on stability and range of motion, as well as perfecting our strength and resilience game by practicing different ways of getting up, down, and back up again. In Bouncing Bodies (plyometrics) class, January will be dedicated to focusing on basic strengthening, stretching and flexing our lower bodies in particular; a great opportunity to get started with plyometrics at a slower foundational pace to really get the basics down before “jumping ahead” to more advanced levels! As of February, more advanced options will be presented/integrated into the class, however, the class will continue to welcome all bodies and levels.
To sign up or get more information about classes, please email me at contact@yesbodies.com

Please email at richdgaccione@gmail.com for more information about scheduling.
Alex of Fat Chance Coaching Announcements!
January can be a really difficult time for folks in recovery from an eating disorder, fat folks, and anyone choosing to wave the flag “Riots Not Diets”. The cultural obsession new year’s resolutions and weight loss are nearly impossible to escape. Being a body positive warrior is hard work especially this time of year so self-care is paramount. Along with moving my body and connecting with friends at NewEthic here are some of my favorite online self-care tools:
The quiet place project
Mindshift App
PTSD Coach
Pixel Thoughts
Plant Nanny
Alex’s Classes:

We Are a Safe Space <3

In this dark time, on this dark day, I realize the desperate need for secure, safe, spaces now more than ever. I see the need for community, support, and defense. We are staring down the barrel of, possibly, the most fucked up time in this country, and that’s saying a lot considering how much oppression built this culture. In recent history we have seen the Japanese in internment camps HERE, we’ve seen many folks, not just the Jewish, who were prosecuted abroad by the Nazi party, we’ve seen the rape and slaughter of animals, we’ve seen the oppression of those standing for Standing Rock; the original people of our land. The culture we were living in was steadfastly a rape culture, and today we were told that women can’t be in power but their rapists can. We can’t change this message but we can support our community. We can gain strength when the world seems like it tries, so much, to take it away. In this time we need to support one another, and remember that if they come for your neighbor and you ignore it, they will eventually come for you. It’s not all mourning though. We don’t have that luxury. Allow yourself your anger, your grief, fear, sadness, or whatever you feel. Allow your network the same rights, hold space, support, stay flexible. We need to stand strong in the face of the horrific tragedy that has just happened and the guaranteed tragedies to come. We wish there was more, but in this upside down world that is so fucked up, we are here for anyone needing safe space in the world right now. We stand as a safe space from not just the shitty pressure of the fitness industry, but from of the world too. If you need safe space, a safe community, we are here. We will always be a place where ALL folks are welcomed, as long as they are not oppressive or abusive. We feel helpless and scared too, but the only thing to do is stick together so… We are offering a free first class for anyone needing to feel strong, safe and happy, please email with “Fuck Trump” or some similar sentiment to hollynewethic@gmail.com . If you decide to come, I’ll be writing workouts suitable for all fitness levels and there is no pressure. You can also come to stretch, meditate, get in snugs with pups, lay in the office, or do your own workout (assuming you can do this safely and confidently). This is a gym, of course, but more than that it is a community space. To all you in the streets tonight, stay safe, protect each other, and make sure someone knows where you are so you have support. To those hiding tonight, I’m so sorry for what this country has done, we got this, we just have to figure out how. Standing strong, always and forever. – Holly and the NewEthic Community14962578_1213659711989384_5092092123012640298_n.jpg

Holly’s Class Schedule is:

Wed 3 pm Yay Time Group Class (Strength and Conditioning)

NewEthic November Newsletter!

November has arrived! Which means, of course, that the “holidays” are officially upon us, which RULES! Some updates, notes, classes including BLACK FRIDAY DEALS below! We appreciate you all so much ❤ Thanks for ruling life and being bad asses! Also congrats on everyone’s PR’s, can’t wait to see you get all the gainz at the end of December! Thanks for your patience with the epic long blog post, so much to share!

The second annual NewEthic Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving will be held the last Sunday before Thanksgiving Day, the 20th. Hopefully this means ya’ll can come, get your omnom on, and still travel to see family. All vegan of course. RSVP here https://www.facebook.com/events/184566925280580/ and please update with how many guests you plan on bringing and what dish as the date gets closer. This is a dog friendly event for NON jumpy, barky or bitey, and VERY well behaved pup friends.

Mass Gainers Class!

This is Coach Ed’s class on getting big, strong and epic, held at noon on Wednesday and Friday each week. Cost is $120 a month or $20 drop in. Email edbauerfit@gmail.com if you have questions or sign up officially by sending payment to PayPal using this address. Yay gainz!

Toast to the Turkeys!

Ed and I will be speaking at the Harvest Home Sanctuary Toast to the Turkeys Event on Saturday the 12th from Noon to 4 pm. Come party with us, eat delicious holiday foodage, and see us talk about stuff. Link for tickets and more info at https://www.facebook.com/events/1016373831782157/. Mini Road Trip!

Holly’s Classes!

I’m thinking of adding classes! If you have a specific time that works, let me know. If not, would Friday at 3 pm work for you? There is also some more demand for mid day classes and later night (8 to 9 pm) classes to accommodate commute times. Let me know if that is something you’re interested in.

A Few Annoying Notes!

-Please try to be here on time. Life happens so don’t worry if one day you can’t find parking, someone just can’t find the gas pedal in front of you or you get stuck in traffic. ALL GOOD. But please try to be on time so you can properly warm up with the class and so we don’t have to wait on you. Showing up early is recommended too, especially if you have specific soreness or pain that you want or need to roll out.

-Please try RSVP for classes within 24 hrs of the class happening, or at least as soon as you can. Also, please UN RSVP in the same time period or more so I can know who to expect. Every workout is written to accommodate the needs, goals, desires and abilities of each person attending so it’s much better if I know who will be in attendance, especially when planning team or partner workouts. Thanks!!

Friday (Holly) classes are for digging into olympic lifting! I know you might feel you hate or are terrible at these but it’s likely because you haven’t gotten enough lifts in to feel comfortable with them! Come to this class to hone technique and learn more so you can be like HELL YEA I RULE AT OLY!

-Please latch the outer gate when you come in. This way puppies stay safe and the gate stays quiet.

-There is still room for serious lifting goals in the Epic Powerlifting Crew on Thurs at 5:30. This is a 90 minute class focused on pure strength.

Holly’s Semi Private Training!

There is still a tiny bit of room in the schedule for Semi Private training or to jump in with others who are paired! Reach out to other members or to me if you’re interested and we can get you started! This is a great opportunity to dig deeper into movements, work on goals you want to accomplish and anything else you’d like outside of group class. I love it because it’s the energy and fun of group class with the one on one support, programming and attention of personal training.

All evening classes will be canceled Thanksgiving day to accommodate family and friend events for coaches and members alike! Eat the food, get the gainz, enjoy the company ❤

The PR Party! Team Holly Class Time!

Given that many of you work until 5 pm, this could be taking over the normal Friday at 7 pm, Wed at 5:30 pm, or 8 pm Thurs. If none of these works, no worries! Let me know times that work for you! (hollynewethic@gmail.com)

The PR Party! Team Ed Class Time!

Team Ed, email him at edbauerfit@gmail.com which time(s) can work for each of you and he will do his best in opening up one additional class that works best for everyone!

Coach Alex’s Classes!

I (Holly) have been struggling with chronic pain from a recurring shoulder injury that became next to un-useable recently. In only 30 min Jen took away roughly 60% of the pain! It’s incredible and she is rad to kick it with. Rich had similar experiences with a shoulder pain issue he was having. Get rid of pain! Hit her up 😀

Jennifer works with chronic and acute pain from sports and fitness injuries. She also specializes in chronic pain disorders and illnesses including fibromyalgia and lupus. MPS-Therapy is beneficial for pain disorders, sleep disorders, scar tissue release, inflammation, constipation, and is used as an alternative to acupuncture.

30 minute session $45

60 minute session $80

She also offers Private sessions! Restorative, Vinyasa, Yoga Swing, Fitness Yoga, Guided Meditation and More! 60 minutes sliding scale $75-50 and Semi Private (minimum 2 people) $35 per.

Offers valid with purchase or email proving interest within this time (to accommodate questions) beginning at 8:00 pm Friday Nov 25th and Ending at Midnight PST Sunday Nov 27th.
